Winter Gardening in India: What to Plant and How to Prepare

Winter is one of the best seasons for Indian gardens — cooler temperatures mean lower water stress and a wider range of flowering and ornamental plants thrive. Here’s how to make the most of it.

What grows well. Winter (roughly November–February across most of India) is ideal for cool-season flowering plants like marigold, petunia, pansy, and dianthus, along with many ornamental foliage plants that struggle in peak summer heat.

Reduce watering frequency. Cooler temperatures and lower evaporation mean most gardens need noticeably less water in winter — overwatering is a more common mistake than under-watering this time of year.

Mulch to protect roots. A layer of mulch helps retain soil warmth and moisture overnight, when winter temperature drops are sharpest, especially for younger plantings.

Prune and tidy. Winter’s slower growth rate makes it a good window for structural pruning and clearing summer-damaged growth, setting the garden up for a strong spring.

Terrace and rooftop gardens need extra attention. Elevated gardens are more exposed to wind and temperature swings — check that plant supports and windbreaks are in good condition before the coldest weeks.
